Day 1 - Portimao - WSBK

Leon is competing at the final round of the World Superbike Championship this weekend once again for the Aprilia team, whom he rode for at Magny Cours a few weeks ago. Once again the 2009 British Superbike Champion is riding at a circuit in which he has never ridden at before.

In first free practice this morning Leon was in 17th position and 1.3 seconds off pole. After making some changes to the Aprilia Leon completed 25 laps and his best time was a 1.46.183. After further changes Leon went out in first qualifying and did a 1.45.333, he sadly did not improve on his position and dropped to 19th place just behind British rider Tom Sykes.

Commenting he said “I’ve never been to Portimao before and the track is awesome, really fast and flowing but great to ride. I’m not unhappy with what I have done today on the bike, in fact I feel good. I know I am only 1.5 seconds off provisional pole and I know once we make a few changes to the Aprilia we will be able to improve. I would like to get a good qualifying position tomorrow to enable me to get a good position in the two races on Sunday. We made a lot of changes to the bike but some weren’t the right changes so we are just trying to find a good set up to suit my riding style and the circuit and then it should all be good. We have another qualifying session in the morning which will determine if I make the break for Super Pole and then a practice session before Superpole tomorrow afternoon. I’d like to think we’re moving in the right direction and I’m looking forward to getting back out on the track tomorrow.”
